Behavior Coach (Teacher Consultant)
Compensation Range: $58-62/hour
Location: Newport, MI; Onsite – School Setting
Position Summary
A school-based Behavior Coach/Teacher Consultant serves as an instructional partner and clinical expert, providing shoulder-to-shoulder coaching for educators, developing Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), and overseeing Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) implementation within a Michigan school district. Key Duties
- Provide consultation to administrators, instructional staff, students, and families regarding evidence-based practices for the prevention and intervention of behavioral health concerns.
- Work in collaboration with local district teams in their ongoing development and promotion of behavioral health interventions and services through multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) and positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS).
- Assist school teams in defining and measuring behavior and work with teams to establish and implement individualized and targeted interventions.
- Build capacity within school teams to implement evidence-based interventions targeting student behavioral health concerns to support access to LRE.
- Observe implementation of interventions and provide feedback to staff and families regarding the integration of supports within classroom, school, and community activities.
- Provide a problem-solving service to students and families through individual, group, and community counseling methods to enhance the psychological, behavioral, emotional, cognitive, and social factors that are critical for the prevention, treatment, or management of behavioral health concerns.
- Communicate with mental health/whole child services or outside agencies to coordinate services and serve as a liaison between school, home, and community supports.
- Support county wide crisis intervention.
- Provide training and information regarding behavioral health to relevant stakeholders.
- Manage referral process and intake.
- Engage in regular professional learning opportunities to stay current on evidence-based practices.
- May conduct MET evaluations as appropriate.
- Demonstrate enthusiasm, positive attitude, and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, staff, families, and community agencies.
- Strong oral and written communication skills; willingness to organize and lead professional development training and in-services.
- May apply Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) techniques with students.
- Reliable transportation and valid driving license.
- Maintain regular, predictable in-person attendance.
- Assume other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Requirements
Education
- Master/EdS in School Psychology or Master of Social Work Degree, which includes a minimum of 500 clock hours in supervised social work practicum experience, or
- Must have received a recommendation for temporary or full approval from a Michigan school of social work training program by obtaining an SSW-310 form, or
- Master’s degree in special education and the ability to meet state requirements for approval as a teacher consultant for Approval in Special Education
Licenses & Certifications
- Meet the requirements, at a minimum, under R380.20I et seq for a preliminary School Psychologist certificate as outlined by the Michigan State Department of Education or
- Have a Master's level Social Work License or Limited Master's Level Social Work License from the State of Michigan or
- MI Teacher Consultant (Hold M.Ed. or Ed.M. AND at least two (2) of those years must be teaching in a special education classroom. AND hold a TC certification by the MDE Office of Special Education. (or eligible to apply.
- Board Certified Behavior Analyst applicants are highly encouraged to apply.
Experience:
- Minimum of three years' experience in special education or working with the special needs population.
- • Broad knowledge of behavioral health
Skills
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community; ability to speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communications.
