Job Description

Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist needed in Denver, CO area for next school year

Job Title: Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS)
Location: Denver, CO Area
Start Date: August 18, 2025
Duration: Through End of October (Possible Extension through November)
Schedule: Part-Time, 0.6 FTE (Approx. 24 hours/week)
Compensation: $50–$65/hour (based on experience)

We are seeking a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) for a part-time, school-based position in the Denver, CO area. This is a temporary assignment to cover a leave, beginning August 18 and continuing through the end of October, with the possibility of extension through November (not guaranteed).

This role supports students across 13 school sites, serving grades 3–12 as well as a transition program for young adults. The position is 0.6 FTE (approximately 24 hours per week), and travel between sites is required.


Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct instruction in orientation and mobility skills to students with visual impairments

  • Develop and implement individualized goals aligned with each student’s IEP

  • Conduct functional mobility assessments and environmental safety evaluations

  • Teach safe travel techniques including cane use, sighted guide, environmental awareness, and public transportation navigation

  • Support students’ independence in accessing school and community environments

  • Collaborate with Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVIs), classroom staff, and families to promote skill carryover

  • Travel between schools to deliver services according to student needs

  • Participate in IEP meetings and provide progress updates and recommendations

  • Maintain accurate service records and progress documentation


Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist Qualifications:

  • Current COMS certification through ACVREP

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation & Mobility or related field

  • Experience working with K–12 students and transition-age youth preferred

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work independently across multiple sites

  • Reliable transportation and valid driver’s license required

  • Understanding of IDEA, IEP processes, and school-based service delivery
