Job Description

Job Description for Registered Nurses (RNs) 

Setting:?Residential Programs (including but not limited to) 
Location:?Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Manhattan, Staten Island & Long Island 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Serve as a member of the interdisciplinary team, coordinating and following through on provisions of health care services for assigned program(s). 

  • Arrange medical services for Persons Supported (Individuals) and issue medical referrals as needed. 

  • Provide follow-up on medical problems for Persons Supported (Individuals). 

  • Conduct training for staff in medical administration, personal hygiene, basic first aid, dental hygiene, infection control, adaptive equipment, vital signs, signs and symptoms of illness, and other necessary in-services. 

  • Handle control of communicable diseases and infections through identification and assessment, reporting to consulting physician, and implementation of appropriate protective and preventive measures, including staff training in infection control. 

  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and annual reviews as required by each division. 

  • Monitor required staff health records and provide tests in accordance with regulatory agency requirements. 

  • Provide immediate first aid with referral to outside emergency services or private physician. 

  • Participate in routine individual case reviews. 

  • Prepare and maintain medical documentation on each person served. 

  • Administer medications when appropriate and supervise certified staff in administration. Supervise storage of medications. 

  • Provide supervision and training for Licensed Practical Nurses and/or less experienced Registered Nurses during their tenure at the agency. 

  • Provide first aid and attend to emergency needs of individuals. 

  • Maintain Nursing office and order supplies as required. 

  • Transport persons served to appointments as necessary. 

  • Attend team meetings and required in-service as scheduled. 

  • Visit persons served at home as requested by Director or designee. 

  • Keep abreast of changes in the Nursing field. 

  • Perform other related duties as requested. 

  • Review visit summaries and follow up on recommendations. 

  • Ensure the MARs are accurate and that AMAPs are administering medications as prescribed. 

  • Conduct member assessments. 

  • Provide in-services as needed. 

  • Address any additional needs to support the members' care. 

Qualifications:

  • Valid New York State Driver’s License is preferred but not required. 

  • License and current registration as a Registered Nurse in the State of New York. 

  • CPR/BLS Certification. 

  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English. 

  • Good oral and written communication skills. 

  • Good organizational skills. 

  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with coworkers, employees, individuals, families, and outside contacts. 

  • Must be able to maintain the strictest confidentiality. 

  • Knowledge of equipment typically used by persons receiving services, including wheelchairs and adaptive devices. 

  • Must be willing to work at various program sites. 

Education and/or Experience: 

  • Graduate of an accredited program of professional nursing. 

  • At least one year of experience as a Registered Nurse in the delivery of community-based health services to individuals with developmental disabilities.
